A communication workshop for trusted Ag advisors

Book a When Farmers Open Up Workshop

Many farmers are more likely to confide in someone they already know and trust before reaching out to a mental health professional. This workshop prepares agricultural professionals for those unexpected moments when a routine business conversation becomes personal.

When Farmers Open Up is a practical communication workshop designed for trusted agricultural professionals who work directly with farmers, including agronomists, veterinarians, financial advisors, ag retailers, extension staff, commodity organizations, and others who regularly build relationships with producers.

Using realistic agricultural case studies and interactive discussion, participants learn how recognize and respond in a supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental way without taking on the role of a counsellor.

The primary learning goals of the program include:

  • Notice: Recognize the verbal, emotional, and behavioural signs that a routine conversation may be shifting into one about personal stress, mental health, or well-being.

Acknowledge: Respond with empathy and confidence by validating a farmer's experience without trying to fix the problem or provide counselling.

Stay: Learn how to remain present during difficult conversations, ask supportive questions, listen effectively, and avoid common communication pitfalls that can unintentionally shut the conversation down.

Bridge: Build confidence in connecting farmers with appropriate mental health, crisis, and community resources while respecting professional boundaries and maintaining trust.

Know Your Role: Understand the unique role trusted agricultural professionals play in supporting farmer well-being, while recognizing where their responsibility begins and ends.

  • Build Communication Skills: Practice responding to realistic agricultural scenarios using language that feels natural and appropriate for conversations in the field, shop, office, or farmyard.

  • Strengthen the Agricultural Support Network: Recognize the important role trusted agricultural professionals play in supporting farmer well-being and reducing barriers to accessing care.
