AGWELL THERAPIST PROFILE

Matt Groeneveld, MTS, MACP

Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC)

Matt brings a grounded, practical approach to therapy shaped by his experience farming in southern Alberta.

Like the prairie he grew up on, with its equal vastness of earth and sky, his approach is focused on the essentials. He farmed for a number of years on a mixed grain and cattle operation south of Calgary, with the usual side hustles along the way.

As the mental health conversation made its way onto the farm, he found himself paying attention, eventually getting involved with the Canadian Centre for Agricultural Wellbeing and AgWellAB. That experience led him back to school to build on his Master of Theological Studies and complete a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology.

Today, he provides counselling through Greenfield Counselling, offering remote support by phone and video.

Matt offers online and phone counselling across Alberta, so you can access support from wherever you are.

Modalities: Online or phone counselling

Connection to Agriculture

Matt takes a grounded approach to therapy.

The noise of life — literal and figurative — can pull people away from themselves, others, and what matters. Finding a way forward often involves giving voice to what’s going on underneath.

But to hear it clearly, the noise has to be quieted first.

His work draws from approaches including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, and trauma-informed practice.

Apart from some not insignificant side quests, the farm has always been part of Matt’s life.

From picking strawberries with his Opa, to battling sawflies and lygus bugs, to moving cattle and praying for rain, he has lived the realities of farm life firsthand.

He has also seen how farming communities respond to challenges, sometimes coming together, sometimes pulling back, and understands both sides of that experience.
