Two Days of Learning, Connection, and Honest Conversation
AgWellAB was proud to partner with Young Agrarians to host two powerful days focused on farm transitions, identity, and the future of agriculture in Central Alberta.
Together, we brought farmers, new and aspiring producers, educators, community members, and researchers into the same room. That mix matters. Farm succession is not only a financial or legal process. It is personal, relational, and deeply tied to identity.
A Powerful Start: Farm Succession Day
Young Agrarians helped co-host a full day dedicated to farm transition and succession. We were honoured to have Annessa Good-Hassard deliver a keynote address grounded in lived experience. She spoke openly about the issues surrounding farm transition, the tension between generations, and the complexity of stepping into a legacy while also shaping your own path.
The day also featured a thoughtful and practical panel discussion that included:
Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) representative Kevin Chanut
Dr. Rebecca Purc-Stephenson from AgWell and the UofA
Three experienced producers who shared their own transition journeys
The panel moved beyond theory. They discussed real decisions, hard conversations, financial pressures, and what they would do differently. Participants asked direct questions. The dialogue was honest and grounded in Alberta farm realities.
Day Two: Central Alberta Mixer
The Central Alberta Mixer created space for new and aspiring farmers to connect with one another and with experienced producers. Young Agrarians has built a strong community of next-generation farmers, and this event continued that momentum in our region.
Breakout sessions reflected both practical and emerging priorities in agriculture. Topics ranged from soil health, grazing management, to social justice in agriculture. Participants moved between sessions, exchanged ideas, and built connections that we expect will continue well beyond the event.
Why This Matters
Farm transitions are increasing across Alberta. Many producers are approaching retirement. Many young farmers are searching for pathways in. Yet succession often stalls because the emotional and relational components are not addressed alongside financial planning.
As I reflect on these days, I can't help but remember we started talking about hosting an event one year ago. TO see that vision come to life is truly inspiring! These two days demonstrated what is possible when we bring people together across generations and roles. When we create space for stories. When we treat succession as both a business decision and a human process.
We are grateful to our speakers, panelists, partners, and everyone who showed up ready to learn and share.
This is how we strengthen the future of farming. Together.
