agwellAB Presents at Alberta SPCA Animal Welfare Symposium

Supporting animal welfare through early detection of farmer distress

We joined partners from the Alberta SPCA at the Animal Welfare Symposium to highlight a project focused on improving support for farmers and their animals. The session was part of the inaugural Animal Welfare Symposium hosted by the Alberta SPCA, which brought together community leaders to explore complex issues at the intersection of animal welfare and human well-being. animalwelfaresymposium.ca+1

The project builds on our collaboration with the Alberta SPCA to develop tools, training, and resources for Peace Officers who respond to animal distress calls across the province. In many cases, officers encounter situations where animal welfare concerns are linked to the well-being of the farm owner. Officers currently have limited training and resources to recognize and respond to signs of mental health stress in these contexts. Alberta SPCA

Our work aims to fill that gap. We are developing practical assessment tools and guidance that help Peace Officers identify when mental well-being may be a factor, and connect farmers with relevant supports while ensuring the welfare of animals. This effort reflects a One Health approach, recognizing that human health, animal welfare, and community resilience are interconnected. Alberta SPCA

This initiative is funded in part through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership. We appreciate the chance to share these early insights at the symposium and look forward to continuing this work to strengthen rural communities. highcountrynew
